Caulfield Cup Betting

The courageous Mark Kavanagh trained December Draw has remained a solid $2.30 favourite after drawing a middle barrier for Saturdays Caulfield Cup and his rivals are running scared!

He’s the shortest favourite to go off in forty years but he has the difficult task of getting his first attempt at 2400m before he can justify his price. Even though the pointers look good that he will acheive the distance I’m not entirely sure I would be putting my hard earned cash on a unproven horse at that price.

He is head and shoulders above his competition of course, his preparation has gone spot on, he arrives from his victory in the Turnbull and connections are confident he will be even better come Saturday. It all adds up to a win situation, but for me, it’s the price I can’t have.

Those brave enough to take him on include the former German stayer Lucas Cranach a $8.50 chance who has a nice barrier three to help his cause. However, news of recent foot abscess problems have to be a worry for his backers. The situation is being monitored by connections as the build up to the race continues but should he get the go ahead to open his Australian account I quite fancy his chances of a solid run at a much better price for my money.

Another I like is Mighty High at $15.00, he’s top weight but that should pose little problem, he won the Chater Cup over 2400m in Hong Kong back in May with the same weight on his back and from past runs it looks to be a case of the further the better. He took fourth in the Caulfield Stakes behind Descarado last up and is the type to make the best of a given situation. Not necessarily the winner but all things considered he should give plenty for your money.

The mare Southern Speed drew barrier four and got herself more fans, she has shortened into $13.00, Tullamore is a $17.00 chance, Newcastle Cup winner Green Moon is priced at $12.00 while AJC Australian Oaks winner Absolutely is $16.00.
